Liberation Through Elimination: A Key to Optimise Peak Performance

Oct 10, 2023

We live in an era saturated with information, opportunities, and distractions. While the modern age brings an abundance of resources, it also presents a unique challenge: how to filter out the noise and focus on what truly matters. This challenge, can be tackled through a principle called "Liberation Through Elimination."

What is "Liberation Through Elimination"?

Liberation Through Elimination is about removing the unnecessary or redundant elements in your life. It's about understanding that less can often be more, especially when it comes to focusing our energy and attention on what truly propels us forward.

The idea is similar of the saying, "It's not about adding more things to our life, but subtracting the unnecessary." By understanding and implementing this concept, we can access a higher state of performance, also known as "flow."

The Importance of Entering the Flow State

Flow, a term popularised by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is that optimal state of consciousness where we feel our best and perform our best. When in flow, we're so immersed in the task at hand that all distractions fall away, time seems to dilate, and our performance dramatically improves.

One of the prerequisites for entering a flow state is having a clear, unobstructed focus on the task at hand. This is where the idea of elimination becomes crucial. By eliminating distractions, unnecessary tasks, and redundant information, we can more readily tap into the zone of optimal performance.

Practical Steps to Achieve Liberation Through Elimination

  1. Audit Your Time: Before you can eliminate, you need to know what occupies your time and attention. Keep a log for a week. You might be surprised at how much time is eaten up by non essential tasks or distractions. (The Toggle App is a useful way to track this time)
  2. Prioritise Ruthlessly: Once you've conducted your audit, prioritise your tasks. What truly moves the needle for you? Which tasks align with your long term goals and which ones are just busy work? Eliminate low value tasks.
  3. Set Boundaries: In the age of constant connectivity, it’s easy to be exposed to information overload. Set clear boundaries for when you'll check emails, social media, or take calls. Designate specific times for deep work.
  4. Declutter Your Space and Mind: A cluttered environment often leads to a cluttered mind. Regularly tidy up your workspace.
  5. Learn to Say No: Not every opportunity is worth pursuing. Sometimes, saying no can be the most empowering decision you make. It allows you to commit fully to the essential tasks and projects.

The Liberated Future

By embracing the principle of "Liberation Through Elimination," not only can we achieve better performance in our professional and personal tasks, but we can also free up more time for the other elements of The Optimse Method, such as movement, interactions, sleep and renewal.

While big tech, the media and marketing companies continue to compete for our attention, bombarding us with more – more information, more tasks, more desires – it might just be the art of elimination that sets us free and optimises our true potential.
